Advantages of Breast Feeding
As a vocal supporter of breast feeding, I've been asked on numerous occasions to guest speak to new mums to be at antenatal classes. I can't really put my finger on why I am so keen to talk about the advantages of breast feeding; I just know that in my heart it is right for me. If I can help persuade others to try breast feeding, I'm more than happy to get involved.
In a way, I see my role as more of an experienced mother. A lot of the attendees at our antenatal classes are first time mothers, they've not really thought too much about whether they intend to breast feed their off spring or use a bottle. As a result, they are often influenced by their friends, parents or what they know from magazines. Often, they're not aware of the benefits and advantages of breast feeding and dismiss it before they've even giving it proper thought.
For me, the absolute number one benefit of breast feeding is that it helps to build an instant bond with your baby. Immediately, your baby is relying on you to provide them with their food, you can gaze into their eyes as they take their milk as they become accustomed to your face, your smiles and your cooing. This time is not to be underestimated; tests have proven that breast fed babies is on the whole more secure and confident as they grow up.
On this point, many argue that breast feeding alienates the father. Due to the mother having the baby at her breast, it is suggested that the dad is missing out on his own important bonding time. My answer to this is it depends on what other roles the father is involved with. If they are taking part in the bathing ritual, this is equally as important as feeding time, so bonding currency is not lost. Besides, if this truly is a show stopper, then consider using a breast pump and sharing the duties out.
One of the other advantages of breast feeding is the cost, you'd be amazed at just how much powdered milk costs. Plus there are all of the different types available and it is becoming more usual for small babies to become allergic to certain powdered milks. Mother's attempting a day out a the sea side will curse the day they decided to feed junior with a bottle as the paraphernalia required to complete this simple task is akin to a weeks luggage for your annual ski trip.
There are also proven health benefits to breast feeding, such as a reduced risk of allergies, asthma and related skin conditions and breathing difficulties. From my own experience, I can confirm that our first child who was breast fed has wonderful skin and fantastic immune system. Whilst our second child who was bottle fed for medical reasons seems to pick up every bug going. Whilst it may be hard to prove that this has anything to do with the type of milk they consumed when they were younger, it does form a similar pattern to scientific studies.
