Breast Feeding Diet

The best breast feeding diet is the one that is best for everyone. You should eat well balanced meals. However, you should add more calcium to the diet that you were eating prior to becoming pregnant, that is if you were eating properly before.

You should include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, whole grain breads, meats or beans, milk and other dairy products. You should add about 500 more calories per day to your normal diet and be sure to drink extra fluids such as water and fresh juices.

You breast feeding diet should include five servings of milk or other dairy products every day. This will give you enough calcium. If you do not like meat or dairy product, you can also get calcium from such items as sesame seeds, broccoli, kale, and tofu. You can also talk with your health care provider to ensure that you are adding enough calcium to your diet.

Now you understand what you should eat for a breast feeding diet, but did you know there are some things you should avoid eating? Well, a few things are recommended avoiding while you are breast feeding. These items are caffeine, certain drugs prescribed and over the counter.

Caffeine is not only found in coffee, but also in sodas, tea and chocolate. It is best to limit your diet with these items and replace them with drinks that are more natural and snacks such as 100% fruit juice and fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you are taking any type of medication, you should talk with your doctor. Some medications should not be passed on to your baby through breast milk.
