Because giving birth at home is not an unlawful act, a pregnant woman may deliver her baby in the comfort of her own home if she wishes. States like Alabama , California , Connecticut , Georgia , Illinois , Kentucky and Massachusetts have some controversial issues with their laws of giving birth, especially those pertaining to services of midwives. It would be wise for a pregnant woman in residence of these states to check and verify the labor law applicable to their state. The same goes to residents of states like Minnesota , Mississippi , Montana , New Jersey , Rhode Island , Virginia , Wisconsin and Michigan . States that definitely do not allow the practices of midwives include Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
