When Your Newborn and You aren’t In Love at First Sight

All mothers dream of that perfect moment when they see their newborn eye to eye for the first time. The little one would grasp her mother’s finger with her entire hand, and everyone would get teary-eyed. It’s instant connection between the new mother and the newborn. But it isn’t like that for everyone – for some new moms and their babies, bonding can take longer to become a reality.

Pregnancy and childbirth are life-changing, psychologically and physiologically, and that different women cope in various ways. Their ability to bond with their baby can take some time. According to Barry M. Lester, MD., a maternal relationship is supposed to be a process and should never be rushed into. Mothers should not blame themselves for the lack of intimacy between them and their newborns. Sometimes, maternal fatigue, post-partum depression and severe post partum pain can be factors.

Dr. Lester, MD, also believes that a baby’s disposition has a lot to do with the bonding process. A baby who has his nights and days mixed up, is extremely fussy, or one who has difficulty latching on during breastfeeding, may give a mother a more challenging time as far as bonding is concerned. When this is the case, the mother should have a strong support system, such as a husband or the child’s grandparents to help take care of the newborn while she recovers.

There are plenty of therapies available and are directed towards helping moms and newborns bond better. If you don’t feel love at first sight, don’t worry and don’t rush it. You will eventually assume the role of motherhood and will think that your baby is the most beautiful baby in the whole universe.
