Have a Musical Labor: Sounds That Soothe

Music is a scientifically – proven relaxant and pain reliever. It has been used for generations as a means of therapy for children as well as adults. Today, music is becoming very popular for women who are in labor. Aside from their calming and soothing abilities, music can also help in the labor process itself. However, not all music genres fit the bill. Here’s a quick guide on what music is best to pack for labor.

  1. Go for instrumentals.
Lyrics can induce emotions or may be distracting to a woman who has her focus entirely on her pain and efforts to push. Go for instrumentals instead because they are more soothing to listen to.
  2. Choose music played by single instruments instead of a band.
This is for the same reason given above. Music with too much instruments playing at the same time may offer little to no comfort at all for the mother whose attention and focus in one just one thing. This is not the time her ears can multi-task. Provide her with something simple and rhythmic. Harp sounds or calming piano music is always a favorite.
  3. You can’t go wrong with the sounds of nature.
Music can also be used alongside imagery, which is a form of relaxation. The woman closes her eyes and envisions a calming place or experience, such as walking on the beach, or resting under a shady tree. Get sounds that feature calming waves of the sea, or gentle rustling of leaves to help her when she’s imagining.
  4. Chanting music works.
The thing about chanting is that it is rhythmic. Everything about labor is rhythmic – from the breaths to the push. Gentle chanting helps a woman coordinate her breaths with her pushes. They also allow her to focus better.
