Myths of Natural Labor Inducing Substances

If you are nearing the end of your pregnancy, you may be wondering what you can do to get it over and done with. Doctors never recommend inducing one’s self into labor, unless you have reached a clean thirty-nine weeks. There are several recommended self induction methods, but there are two questions that need answers: 1) are they effective in inducing labor? And, 2) are they safe? This article talks about the most common labor inducers and whether you can try them:

Castor oil: This is a known laxative. It stimulates the intestines and causes them to contract. While it can also cause the uterine muscles to behave similarly, it won’t cause any changes in the cervix. Plus, it’s going to give you a bad case of embarrassing diarrhea.

Acupressure or massage: These are deeply relaxing and calms stressed muscles, but they aren’t enough to wake up the muscles of the uterus and jolt the cervix into action.

Spicy foods: Hot foods cause the digestive system to overreact. Acids flow upwards, causing the mother a bad case of heartburns. And no, spicy foods aren’t enough to cause any changes in the reproductive system enough to make a mother start labor.

Nipple stimulation: Nipple rolling can cause a sudden release of oxytocin, which is later on important in causing contractions during labor. But in order to get the right amount of oxytocin, you will need a whole lot of nipple rolling. It’s bound to take time and could actually make your nipples sore.

Sexual intercourse: This is believed to be effective because semen contains prostaglandins necessary in ripening the cervix. However, the amount of prostaglandins in semen is not enough to induce labor.
