Factors to Consider When Setting the Environment for Labor and Delivery
Today, there are many types of delivery – a woman can choose to have her baby in water. She can even choose which birthing position is best for her. She is also given freedom on whether she wants to be under any form of pain medication, or experience labor all naturally. However, the places and people may vary, but the characteristics of the birthing environment are what remain constant. They should all give the woman in labor some calm and comfort. Here are some considerations:
- The lighting should never be too glaring or bright. In fact, many women appreciate a dim room because it’s more relaxing. When choosing a birthing location, make sure there are windows (should you want natural sunlight) but they have to have blinds, so that you can close them if it’s too bright out. You may also bring candles for a more relaxing experience, should the location permit it.
- The sounds of the environment affect how well the woman is able to cope with labor. The best birthing place is quiet, but not deadly silent. Make the place calming by playing some soothing music in the background. The best labor music are piano or harp instrumentals, chanting or rhythmic music, or those with water sounds.
- A woman’s choice of who should be there in the room must be respected. Many women who are in labor refuse to see anyone, even the nurse. Therefore, visits should be limited. Only the people she wishes to be in the room with must be present, but a call button must be ensured in the event of an emergency.
- Positioning greatly contributes to how a woman copes with labor. Does she want to sit or walk around? Does she wish to lie – on her back, or on her side? If she has difficulty moving about, safety rails and a support person must be available for assistance.
