Recognizing True from False Labor

The labor process is an exciting and anxious time for an expectant mother and her partner. In a relatively short period of time they may experience one of the most profound changes in their lives. In anticipation for childbirth, the biggest question most women ask is, will they be able to recognize true from false labor? The answer is tricky. Both experienced and first time mothers may have difficulty identifying the difference. Here are some helpful tips:

False Labor

  • False labor contractions are irregular or may become regular at 5-minute intervals but only temporary and may last for only 30 seconds.

  • The pain of false labor can be felt in the back or abdomen above the navel.

  • Contractions are weak and do not get stronger over time.

  • Contractions stop through the use of comfort measures such as lying down, drinking water or taking a hot shower.

True Labor

  • True labor contractions occur regularly, becoming stronger over time, lasting longer and occurring close together.

  • Contractions become more intense with walking. Pain is felt in the lower back, radiating to the lower portion of the abdomen.

  • Contractions continue despite use of comfort measures.

  • True labor may be accompanied by a bloody show or the mucus plug.

It is best to time and monitor the contractions closely. To time contractions effectively, note the minutes that passed from the beginning of one contraction to the next. If ever you are in doubt, it is best to contact your health care provider.
