Labor and Delivery - Where Would You Like to Give Birth?

Before labor and delivery, you have one very important choice to make. That is, where you would like to have your baby. Most women begin to think about this during the first trimester, some may even make a decision at this stage, however it is not really necessary until the third trimester. So you can take your time and think about the different choices.

It is important that you feel comfortable and safe during labor and delivery, so when making your decision try writing down what is also important to you. Perhaps, you would like to share the experience of labor and delivery with the rest of your family? Or you need the comfort and knowledge of being in a hospital should there be an unlikely emergency?

To help you with your decision, we have provided additional details below about some of the more common methods used for labor and delivery.

Labor and delivery, at the hospital

Hospitals are still the most popular choice for labor and delivery. The most obvious reason for this is that most modern hospitals have a dedicated area specializing in labor and delivery, so it helps us to feel secure and safe. Clearly, if anything were to go wrong, a hospital would be the best place to be, with easy and quick access to medical equipment and drugs. It is always best to take the time to become accustomed to the hospital delivery or birthing area, as many of them have different policies and guidelines. If you do not feel comfortable with certain rules or regulations, you always have the choice of alternative venue for labor and delivery, such as a birthing center.

Labor and delivery, birthing center

Specialized Birthing Centers have grown rapidly since the very first one opened back in the mid 1970’s. The objective of a Birthing Center was to provide the best of both worlds for women looking for a home birth but also wanted the reassurances of being in a hospital. Nowadays, a Birthing Center is often on the same campus as a hospital or it will be a special area that has a different atmosphere and feel than is common with a hospital. Birthing Centers are a popular choice among women where there is a reduced risk of complication during pregnancy.

Labor and delivery, home birth

Labor and delivery at home is still common, although not as common as it used to be. Whilst a Birthing Center creates a “home birth” atmosphere, a true home birth occurs at your home with the medical staff essential guests. There is a lot to consider before choosing a home birth, not least whether the medical staff feel there is any risks that might harm you or your baby during labor and delivery. Yet at the same time, a home birth can be a wonderful experience which enables the whole family to share in the magical moment.

Whichever location you choose for your own labor and delivery, make sure that you speak to your partner and medical advisers about your choice. There maybe specific circumstances about your pregnancy that mean one location is better than the other.
