Natural Birth - The Choice Is Yours

Some people say that there is nothing more natural than giving birth. It’s probably true, yet with recent advances in technology and medicine it is becoming rarer for western women to have a natural birth. We think that part of this is because of the lack of knowledge about what a natural birth is and what it involves. It is also the result of changes in society, pain is bad, therefore if we can reduce the pain, that’s a great thing right?

The important thing to know is that the choice is yours. If you have a low risk pregnancy, there is nothing to stop you from having a natural birth. You may find that friends, family or even your medical team try to talk you out of this, yet they shouldn’t because this is about your experience and what you want to do.

This article is for women who would like to consider a natural birth. It is a helpful guide which includes all of the areas you will need to think about before making your choice.

  • Make sure you have a supportive medical team helping you. Your doctor or midwife should have plenty of experience with delivering babies via the natural birth method.

  • Choose where you would like to have your natural birth. Some mothers prefer to have their birth in a hospital, just in case the pain becomes to unbearable. While other women opt for home births or birthing centers. The main point is to choose some where that will help you to feel relaxed and comfortable.

  • Have a clear and defined birthing plan. If possible, make sure that your doctor and midwife are supportive of the birth plan.

  • If you’re lucky enough to have access to a birthing partner, share you thoughts and objectives with them. It has been proven that support during a natural birth often plays a big part in the success of the natural birth process. It also helps the woman to feel less alone and part of a team in some cases.

  • One of the most important things you can do before a natural birth is to learn and understand all of the possible labor positions. Using different positions can mean less pain, so it is important to read up and practice these positions.

  • Try to meet like minded people or other expectant mothers who are also considering a natural birth. Whilst this is not always possible, it is amazing how powerful a supportive peer group is.

  • Do as much research as possible about a natural birth. Much of the appeal about a natural birth is spiritual rather than physical. Take the time to write down and explore why a natural birth is important to you, this will help counter any doubts you might have on the night.

As we’ve already mentioned, a natural birth is a choice that you make as the mother. If it is something that you’re intent on doing and you understand the risks involved, there is no reason why your medical team would not support your decision.
