Natural Birth

A natural birth is a birth experience which does not include the use of additional medication or drugs to reduce the pain associated with labor and delivery. There are a number of reasons why women would prefer a natural birth over a birth that included pain relief, including:

  • They want to enjoy and experience the feeling of giving birth in the natural state. Some women argue that a natural birth affords the mother the opportunity of a more rewarding and satisfying birth.

  • A natural birth is part of their cultural or religious beliefs.

  • Many women prefer a natural birth because they are anti medication or anti intervention.

  • Some experts argue that a natural birth is better for the baby is it arrives in a non drugged condition; therefore it will be more active. Whilst there is no scientific proof about this, it is worth having a conversation with your doctor about.

  • It is also widely believed that by not using drugs, the mother and baby will have a greater bonding experience.

Clearly, with a natural birth, there also comes risk. So if this is something that you are considering, you should speak to your partner and a medical doctor. Most general hospitals require advance notice of your plans, and will often try to talk you out of it. If you do find that you are lacking support from the medical fraternity about your natural birth, you might consider the option of a home birth, or a birthing center.

Making a decision to have a natural birth is often taken early on in the pregnancy; many women are attracted to the idea of a natural birth, yet may not fully understand the amount of pain involved in labor and delivery. This is why it is very important to discuss your specific needs. Once we become aware of the possible pain, or we listen and hear stories from friends and family, we start to consider an alternative to a natural birth.

Planning for a natural birth will involve lots of training. You will need to practice different breathing and relaxing techniques. The most important thing is that your body is relaxed and prepared for the birth, so you will need to attend planning classes or research this area. You should also ensure that you have access and are close to your midwife, share your plans and trust in their experience.

Interestingly, there is no data about whether a natural birth is more successful than a medically aided birth. We only have anecdotal evidence about the bonding process and the feeling of closeness experienced by the mother. What we do know is that most natural births occur at home, this is most likely because the common surroundings help us to relax and feel comfortable.

Ultimately, a natural birth is a matter of choice; it is something for you and your partner to discuss. Many argue that with the advancement in technology and medicine, there really is no need to experience the pain of childbirth, whilst many others argue that this is a critical experience of having a baby and bonding with your child.
