Caesarean

A Caesarean section is surprisingly common option for many births these days. A C-section is performed for a variety of reasons. There are legitimate health reasons for both the mother and the baby to perform a caesarean in some cases, but there are also risks with performing a C-section. Because it is a surgery, doctor's will weigh the pros and cons of performing one versus not, and will make their decision based on what's best for the mother and child.

There are many reasons you could need a Caesarean. If the cord comes down prior to the baby (called a prolapsed cord,) a C-section will be performed. Additionally, placental abruption, placenta previa, a misaligned fetus or possible fetal distress are all reasons you may need a Caesarean. However, in the case of fetal distress, you should discuss with your doctor all the alternatives to performing a C-section because of the risks that are involved.

Before a C-section, you can be offered a regional anesthetic, either via an epidural or spinal. Otherwise, you will receive a general anesthetic. If you are nervous about the procedure, your doctor may also give you a sedative to relax you. After the birth, you'll be given some other type of pain medication to keep you comfortable.

From the time the doctor makes the first incision, it takes about five minutes for the baby to be born. Approximately thirty to forty minutes are spent on the remainder of the surgery. Your doctor will advise you on the appropriate plan of recovery once you leave the hospital, and will give you all of the information you need regarding the health of yourself and your newborn baby.
