Pregnancy Complications that Contraindicate Sex
Pregnancy is not reason enough to put a lid on physical intimacy with your partner. In general, it is an enjoyable activity for two and can deepen a couple’s affections before the little one comes into the world. However, when a pregnancy develops a complication, love – making may be one of the things a woman and her partner can be restricted to perform. Here are some complications which contraindicate sex:
-
Broken bag of water – When your amniotic sac has ruptured, it means your labor needs to begin immediately. The sudden gush of water out of the vagina indicates that the uterine environment is susceptible to anything that comes into it. Trauma and infection may be risks.
-
Unexplained discharge of vaginal bleeding – This means that an expectant mother is at a risk of experiencing a miscarriage. Sexual excitement and orgasm causes the uterus to contract, which could make spontaneous loss of baby more likely.
-
Placenta previa – This is a condition wherein part of whole of the placenta covers the part of the uterus that opens out into the cervix and vagina. Sexual intercourse could cause trauma to the placenta.
-
Incompetent cervix – Simply put, an incompetent cervix is one that prematurely dilates and causes premature labor and delivery. However, it occurs very early in the pregnancy, so the result is a miscarriage. Sex is discouraged because any contraction in the pelvic organs could cause the cervix to dilate.
-
STDs – Preterm labor, fetal malformations and miscarriage are some complications brought about by sexually transmitted diseases. As such, it is important to withhold sex until both partners have been treated, and it is equally crucial to practice monogamous, safe sex.
