Macrosomia: Giving Birth to a Large Baby

It is every mother’s wish to deliver a healthy and normal baby. But there are some who are unfortunate enough to suffer certain pregnancy complications. One of the known pregnancy complications but is usually undetermined until after delivery is macrosomia or the delivery of a bigger than normal baby.

When the baby is still inside the mother’s womb, it is difficult to diagnose if that baby is abnormally large or not. Most medical professionals find out about this condition after the baby is delivered and weighed. But for some medical experts, the abnormally big size of the mother compared to the progress of the pregnancy is sign enough for them to get alarmed. They usually recommend an ultrasound to make sure of their diagnosis. Statistics reveal that at least 1 out of 10 babies are macrosomic.

Some of the factors which can be causes for having a macrosomic baby include genetic factors, gestational diabetes, ethnicity, obesity before pregnancy, and increase in weight during pregnancy, and your baby’s gender. Experts also say that if a woman has already given birth to a large baby, chances are, she will continue to deliver large babies in the future.

Delivering a macrosomic baby can be very difficult for a mother because it puts her at risk for many complications like tailbone damage, blood loss, and perineal tearing. On the other hand, macrosomic babies are at risk of shoulder dystocia which could cause injury or even death. Usually, if a mother is diagnosed to be carrying a large baby, the doctors would recommend a cesarean delivery.
