All about Previa

There are many different pregnancy complications an expectant mom could suffer from during the early parts of the pregnancy up to the last trimester. One of these complications is placenta previa. Placenta previa is a condition wherein the mother’s placenta is situated in the lower parts of the uterus, near or covering the cervix. For new mommies, the placenta is the organ responsible for supplying the needed nutrients of the baby during his stay inside the womb.

Placenta previa which is diagnosed in the early parts of the pregnancy is not a cause for alarm. This is because later on in the pregnancy, the placenta might travel to its right location, giving way to the baby to be delivered. However, when placenta previa persists until the later parts of the pregnancy, it might cause some other complications which could result to early delivery of the baby. Also, women who are diagnosed with placenta previa are subject for a cesarean section delivery.

Some of the types of placenta previa include total placenta previa, or the placenta is covering the woman’s cervix completely; marginal placenta previa, or the placenta is located on the cervix’s border; and the low-lying placenta wherein the placenta is situated 2cms from the cervix.

When a woman is diagnosed with placenta previa during the middle part of her pregnancy, the doctor usually does another examination to track the movement of the placenta. Statistics reveal that very few women who are diagnosed with placenta previa continue to have low lying placentas during their time of delivery.
