Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder dystocia is a birth complication where in one or both shoulders fail to enter the pelvis as it should be during a vaginal birth. According to studies, it occurs in 1 percent of all births.

Unfortunately, there are no warning signs to predict which baby will experience shoulder dystocia. But there are risk factors involved. The best predictor could be a combination of these:

  • Large babies, small mothers
  • Mother has gestational diabetes
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Mother is obese
  • Overdue babies
  • Mother has previous history of delivering a baby who experienced dystocia
  • Labor is induced

There are several things doctors do to solve the problem of shoulder dystocia. Maneuvers are tried to manipulate baby’s position. These techniques often help resolve problems in a positive manner, although it is not guaranteed it will work on every case as each birth is unique.

After birth with shoulder dystocia, your doctor will monitor both the mother and the baby. Here are some things doctors watch out for:

  1. When baby needs assistance in breathing
  2. Maternal bleeding
  3. Fractures to the baby’s collar bone
  4. Need for episiotomy because of tearing during birth
  5. Uterine rupture
  6. Fetal Brachical Plexus injury

Even if shoulder dystocia is a rare complication of birth, if you have one or more of the risk factors, it doesn’t hurt to consult your doctor so both of you can plan for a safe delivery.
