High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy

High blood pressure can cause many problems for pregnant women depending on which type of high blood pressure in pregnancy the woman is experiencing. While transient hypertension poses no risks to the developing baby conditions such as chronic hypertension can cause the foetus to develop at a slower rate, giving the potential for problems with the baby.

At the extreme end of the spectrum is a condition called preeclampsia where high blood pressure is a main factor. This condition can actually lead to the death of the mother and baby. It is essential that treatment for any type of high blood pressure in pregnancy is used and as early as possible to avoid any dangers, some of which are fatal.

Generally after labor and delivery if you aren't suffering from chronic hypertension then your high blood pressure will return back to normal levels for conditions such as preeclampsia and transient hypertension. You will probably need to take medication though and attend regular check-ups with your doctor.

While pregnancy is usually an uncomplicated affair for most it is unfortunate that some mothers must go through the pain and extra worry of having a condition such as high blood pressure during pregnancy. Please read the rest of our site for support and more information on pregnancy.
