Pregnancy Massage Benefits

During pregnancy, an expectant mother goes through a lot of physical change. Pregnancy massage is a growing field which medical experts continually explore in order to evaluate its abilities in alleviating pre-labor pains. The human touch is a very effective tool in supporting traditional medication.

Therapeutic bodywork is an effective way to improve circulation and body tone, enhance joints and muscles, and generally relieve women of any mental and physical stress. Pregnancy massage has been known to decrease the instances of insomnia. It can alleviate pain in the joints, ankles, pelvis and lower back. It also promotes proper posture and lessens calf cramps and sciatic pain. More importantly, pregnancy massage prepares the muscles for a more bearable labor.

It is not recommended to have a massage during the early stages of pregnancy. Allow at least three months to pass before you get a massage. Avoid percussive and deep-pressured strokes. Therapists should be as gentle as they can when giving pregnant women a massage.

Gently stroking the back area, neck, feet, legs and abdomen can alleviate back pain. Stroking the legs, from the ankles to the thighs, can help relieve pain and swelling. A relaxing massage can also allow pregnant woman to have a relaxing sleep. There are also claims that a gentle massage in the abdomen area can even help the child inside a woman's womb have a more restful sleep.

Just like an ordinary massage, you may include aromatherapy and pleasant oils during the course of the massage. There are some oils that are not suitable for pregnant women. Avoid aniseed, clary sage, basil, fennel, cypress, jasmine, marjoram, juniper and jasmine.

It is important to get the opinion of a doctor before having a massage during pregnancy to determine if it is appropriate for your particular case. Your doctor can also suggest some key areas on your body where a massage can work most effectively.
