Breathing Before Baby

When you are pregnant, one of the things that become progressively difficult to do is breathing. With your baby pushing your diaphragm upwards, you may experience shortness of breath and labored breathing, especially when exerting physical effort or when lying on your back.

Ironically, breathing also is one of the most crucial aspects of pregnancy. During pregnancy, a mother’s demand for oxygen becomes very high because she will be sharing it with the baby in her womb. Breathing well during pregnancy also takes away a mother’s stress and anxieties. With the proper breathing mechanisms and patterns, you can control pain, give yourself a chance to relax, and push more effectively during labor and birthing.

Learning to breathe is perhaps the most important physical exercise a mother-to-be can easily overlook – after all, she’s already doing it, so why is still there a need to practice it? The truth is, you may be been breathing wrong all your life and not know it. Pregnancy is a chance for you to start breathing better.

There are generally two types of breathing that benefits a pregnant woman and her baby. Firstly, deep cleansing breaths that make use of the diaphragm are invigorating, calming and deliver more sustained oxygen to the body. The pant-pant-blow pattern, on the other hand, done by short shallow breathing alternating with a slow exhalation is beneficial to the mother during labor for pain control and during childbirth. Good breathing patterns allow a mother to have more strength when pushing.
