Food for Morning Sickness
Morning sickness is also referred to as the “nausea and vomiting of pregnancy”. As the name implies, this condition usually happens in the morning but may also progress throughout the day. Morning sickness is said to be related to increased estrogen levels during the first trimester of pregnancy. The same symptoms are seen in women on birth control pills, birth control shots or hormonal replacement.
In severe cases, morning sickness can lead to a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum wherein severe vomiting causes dehydration and weight loss.
Since morning sickness happens to almost 70% of pregnant women, studies have been conducted to determine treatment and prevention. The most common remedy for nausea and vomiting is to eat crackers or cereal 15 to 30 minutes before getting up from bed.
Through the years, women turn to herbal remedies because they are afraid that medicinal treatments may affect the development of their babies. Just recently, a comparative study suggested that ginger is safe and effective in relieving morning sickness symptoms. For centuries, ginger has been used for gastrointestinal problems, headaches, arthritis and post surgery nausea and vomiting. Ginger comes in capsules, tea, ginger ale or snaps.
Fruits and vegetables high in water content are also helpful. Examples of these are lemon, watermelon, strawberries, spinach, grapes, lettuce and tomatoes. Foods high in carbohydrates like rice cakes, baked potatoes and gelatin can bring comfort to nauseous pregnant moms.
Other treatment strategies such as avoiding an empty stomach, drinking water 30 minutes after meals, small frequent feedings, and avoiding fatty foods can lessen the symptoms of morning sickness.
