Trying to Conceive - One Couples Inspirational Story

We'd been trying to conceive for over two years before we eventually received the great news about my pregnancy. We'd already taken the home pregnancy test kit which was positive and I was showing some of the classic signs of being pregnant. Despite that, when the doctor finally confirmed it, I still gasped in shock and delight. I was finally going to be a mum after all of this time trying to conceive.

The doctor explained that I was about 8 weeks pregnant, so it looked as if our little mini break away in Paris finally did the trick. It's funny, all this time we had been trying to conceive, we'd read all the books, educated ourselves and all it took was a little break away from the daily stresses and strains of life. It just goes to show, often the best way to conceive is to relax, enjoy the moment and let nature take its course.

Despite the time we spent trying to conceive, it is hard to say whether any of the steps we took to improve our chances of conception actually helped. I think over time we had probably tried everything. At one stage, every time we had finished having sex, I would lie on my back with my legs in the air. My poor husband did not know what to think!

I also banned smoking and drinking for both of us, we even went as far as staying away from smoky places such as pubs and clubs. It's widely proven that if you're trying to conceive, reducing your intake of cigarettes and alcohol improves fertility. Our friends thought that we were making too big a sacrifice and suggested that we should just relax a little more and not get so worked up about it. It was easy for them to say that, they already had their family and had not been trying to conceive for two years.

So now that we've finally received the good news, it is hard to know where to start. We'd been trying to conceive for so long, that I guess we were beginning to think it would never happen. Now that it has, I'm bursting to share our good news with all of our friends and family. I know my parents will be delighted to learn about their first grandchild. That said, we've decided to wait until the end of the first trimester before telling anyone else, as our doctor explained that the first 12 weeks are the most critical.

If I was asked to give advice to other couples trying to conceive, I would advise them to never give up. Mother Nature works in mysterious ways, as long as there are no medical conditions standing in your way, she will get to you eventually. Don't panic and try to remain relaxed, don't make trying to conceive the be all and end all of your life. Now that we're expecting our own bundle of joy, we've started to sound more like our friends, I guess their advice about trying to conceive was right all along.
