Trying to Conceive
It's a wonderfully feeling, you've spoken at length with your partner and you both agree how great it would be to have a baby. For some, it will be the first time they have enjoyed a sexual relationship without any form of protection. For others, trying to conceive will be their ultimate expression of love.
Whichever camp you fall into, you should treat the time when you are trying to conceive as a glorious time of having fun, making love and enjoying each others intimate company. Many couples later explain that their sex life was hugely more satisfying when they were trying for a family, pointing to the fact that they were creating life as a massive motivator.
For some couples, trying to conceive will come easy. They might find themselves expecting a child within weeks of stopping the contraception. For others, it may take a little longer. There is no rule book or magic formula to use when comparing how long it should take to become pregnant, in fact medical experts suggest that it can normally take a couple of months.
Our advice is that you should embrace the time between deciding that you would like to have a baby to actually becoming pregnant. You might also agree that you should put the fact that you are trying to conceive to the back of your mind. Instead, you should concentrate on enjoying this time together and the freedom that you have to explore each others bodies.
If you are a busy couple, each with your own work commitments or already have a demanding family, trying to conceive can be a little more testing. This is especially true if you already have a young family. Smaller children require a tremendous amount of parenting, so it's no surprise that making love is often the last thing we want to do when we eventually hit the sack. The thing is, if you want another baby, you're going to have to have sex at some point!
If finding the time or creating the right atmosphere is proving too difficult, you might try to plan your love making times in advance. This may sound a bit clinical, however for busy couples; this often proves to be one of the better ways of trying to conceive.
Realistic planning is the most important thing to making this work, you should both commit to making the time available. So it is no good saying that you want to have sex on any day that ends with the letter Y, if you already know you can't keep to the schedule. If on the other hand it is more realistic to spend time together at the weekends, make sure you agree a plan to ensure that it happens.
If you've been trying to conceive and been having unprotected sex for more than twelve months, there could be an issue with fertility. At the very least, it is worth visiting your doctor for a check up. Many couples do take a long time trying to conceive, so you should not be too worried but do seek medical advice as a precaution.
