Getting Pregnant after a Vasectomy

In case you're wondering, you're right! It should not be possible to get pregnant after a vasectomy. This is because a vasectomy is a medical procedure that is designed to sterilize a male so that his sperm are unable to travel from his testicles, therefore it is an operation often used by gentleman who would prefer not to have any more children.

That said, it is not completely impossible for a woman to become pregnant after having intercourse with someone who has had a vasectomy. Although, it must be said that it is incredibly rare. There are a number of possible technical reasons why a vasectomy might not have worked, our recommendation is that you should advise your partner to seek council from their medical doctor as soon as possible so that they can be examined to establish the potency of their vasectomy.

Of course, the more subtle minded upon you might also suggest that there are other explanations for getting pregnant after a vasectomy. Once could simply be that you partner did not have a vasectomy after all, another could be that an extra marital affair suddenly got very complicated. There are also vasectomy reversal operations, where in the majority of cases men are once again able to produce babies.

If we're honest, the whole area of getting pregnant after a vasectomy is a very large can of worms. However, in our experience it is important that no one jumps to the wrong conclusions. There is medical evidence that it does happen, so be rational, talk about what has happened and speak with your medical team as soon as possible.
