It’s NOT Your Fault: Dealing with Guilt after a Miscarriage

One of the most common emotional responses a woman or her partner has after a pregnancy loss is guilt. Questions fill the couples’ minds about what they did to cause the miscarriage – they begin contemplating over and over, thinking about how it happened, and what could have caused it. Was it the passionate sex they had the night before? Or perhaps it was because the woman was upset a few hours before the bleeding started? Or could it have been because of she wasn’t careful and she slipped down the stairs?

A woman and her partner goes through feelings of guilt in an attempt to understand why their baby was taken away in such an untimely manner. But here’s the painful truth every couple must know: Babies in the womb DO just die, and it’s not the mother’s, nor the father’s fault. Sure, there are some factors that may increase the risks of a spontaneous pregnancy loss, such as smoking, alcoholism, trauma, drug use, and such, but for the most part, the loss of a baby is really unexplained.

More than fifty percent of all cases of miscarriages are actually caused by chromosomal issues, which neither parents nor medicine can control. This isn’t something that could have been predicted by even the most advanced doctors. Or, perhaps, the cause of the loss may have been due to an infection, trauma or hormone issue that the mother feels responsible for, but she must never be told she caused the miscarriage. Support must be given to every woman and her partner to ensure that these feelings of guilt be resolved and that they can move on with their lives and try again in the future.
