Getting Pregnant Again After a Miscarriage Causes Another Miscarriage: Fact or Fiction?

A common reaction that women get after miscarrying is a feeling of wanting to become pregnant again. Perhaps this is their way of coping with the loss. For others, they have become so accustomed to the changes in their bodies and the idea that they are carrying a child in their womb that it can be difficult to live without these. A few women also want to escape the feelings of emptiness by wanting to become pregnant again. They may get unsolicited advice from family and friends to prevent pregnancy soon after a miscarriage, but how reliable is this advice?

Medically speaking, a miscarriage is such like giving birth – the difference is just the time the baby exited the mother’s body. As such, the woman’s body needs adequate amount of time to recuperate. Her organs need to heal fully, and she should be able to regain her strength before she can carry a pregnancy again. However, there really is no scientific proof that a woman will miscarry again if she becomes pregnant too soon.

What needs to be considered, however, is how physiologically and emotionally ready a couple is before they try for a baby after a miscarriage. While a woman may not experience another miscarriage, her organs may be weak and she may also be physically incapable of coping with the changes that pregnancy brings about. She may also still be grieving and may fail to take care of herself, leading to poor development of the baby in her womb.

Therefore, there is some sense in the advice that couples should wait for a doctor’s go signal before they can try for a baby again after a loss, but it’s not necessarily because they might experience a miscarriage again.
