Can Lifting Cause a Miscarriage?
Now that you are pregnant, you may be concerned of what’s safe and not quite for you and especially your baby. Many pregnant women become overly paranoid about doing the usual activities, because they fear they may harm the baby in the womb. One of those worry-causing activities is lifting. If you have recently become pregnant and are now hesitant to push around the couch, lift a few grocery bags, and especially lift your older children, here’s a myth-buster for you: Lifting does not cause a miscarriage, per se. The body is made to endure pregnancy and all other daily chores. Just because you have become pregnant does not mean you are now more fragile. Your body is designed to keep your baby safe within your womb even if you lift your toddler or work around your home.
The trick here is no listen to your body. It will tell you when to stop. The simple equation is, if it hurts, don’t do it. If your pregnancy is healthy and is progressing well, you do not need to worry about lifting the laundry basket, or having your toddler up in your arms.
Lifting, therefore, is not a miscarriage risk factor. Every pregnant woman must be taught, however, the right techniques to lift and bring something that she carries, without hurting herself, especially her legs and back. The proper way to lift is to squat then lift legs, not to bend over and lift back.
