Mental Health Risks for Miscarriage in Young Women
There is a recent study which shows the link between miscarriage in teens and early twenties, and mental disorders in later life. A researcher from Australia’s University of Queensland has discovered that young women who experience a miscarriage are more prone to developing depression, anxiety-related disorders and alcohol and drug abuse, as compared to women of the same age range who have never been pregnant, or have not lost a baby.
Earlier studies revealed that young women who had abortions in their teens or early twenties were more susceptible to mental health concerns. What about women who have had miscarriages, then? Kaeleen Dingle created the study with two hundred and eighty subjects – women from 18 to 23 years of age and who have been pregnant.
The findings indicated that the psychiatric concerns in some women who have had abortion and in women who have experienced miscarriage were almost the same. Therefore, Ms. Dingle explained that it was not so much about having an induced abortion, but rather the similarity: pregnancy loss. The study also found that the risks for mental health concerns multiplied as the years went by.
In particular, the studies revealed that young women who have lost a pregnancy untimely were three times more susceptible to succumbing to the forces of drugs or alcohol than their counterparts who have never been pregnant or have never experienced miscarriage.
The studies imply that young women who experience untimely loss of a fetus must be given more counseling and support in order to prevent or minimize mental health issues in the long run.
