A Woman’s Guide to Moving Forward After a Pregnancy Loss

A miscarriage is losing a pregnancy to natural causes before the 20th week. Losing a child can be devastating for women. However, everyone must understand that emotional healing takes time. Sometimes words of encouragement from the people you love aren’t enough.

So how exactly can you move on after a pregnancy loss?

Understand the grieving process and allow it to happen. Don’t rush your grief and don’t let anyone rush it for you. Allow yourself to mourn. You may be in denial at first, you may be angry or depressed, you will feel guilty and wonder if there’s anything that you could have done to prevent what had happened. Let go of your guilt and believe that in the end, acceptance will come and this will help ease your pain. Take it slow, you are the best judge of yourself. Stay away from painful situations until you know you’re ready.

Take care of yourself. Eat healthy and take enough rest and sleep. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Do not abuse drugs. These will only make matters worse. Keep a diary; write about your thoughts and feelings. This will be a good outlet.

Get help from others. Talk to your partner. Understand that he is also grieving. Find comfort in each other. Go out with family members and friends; let them know how you feel. Join a support group. Meeting people who went through the same ordeal can be comforting.
