Miscarriage: The Basics
Miscarriage is one of the most common complications of pregnancy a woman could suffer from. Miscarriage is also known as spontaneous abortion, and it is defined as the termination of a pregnancy at a particular stage wherein the fetus is not capable of surviving, which is normally before the 24th week of gestation.
Types of Miscarriages
The type of miscarriage suffered by women differs, and it depends on its occurrence since the woman’s LMP or her Last Menstrual Period. When a woman loses her baby six weeks after her last menstrual period, the miscarriage is termed as chemical pregnancy or early pregnancy loss. On the other hand, when a pregnancy is terminated after more that six weeks since a woman’s last menstrual period, it is called clinical spontaneous abortion.
Signs and Symptoms of Miscarriage
Bleeding during pregnancy is the most common sign that a woman is likely to have a miscarriage. During the course of the pregnancy, when a woman bleeds, it is generally called threatened abortion. Statistics show that almost 50% of women who get medical assistance for bleeding when they are pregnant end up having a miscarriage. There might be other signs and symptoms other than bleeding that can be observed during pregnancy, but studies claim that these are not directly related to miscarriage.
Detection of Miscarriage
Other than bleeding, miscarriage can be detected during a woman’s ultrasound exam and HCG testing. Also, when a woman had a previous miscarriage, their doctors will be closely monitoring them because they are at risk of having another miscarriage in the future.
