Tips for Men: How Women Cope with a Miscarriage

Because men and women grieve differently, it can be confusing for a man to read his female partner’s emotional responses to a recent miscarriage. To help men provide support and care for their fragile partners at this time, below are some of the common ways women grieve and react to a pregnancy loss.

  1. Unstoppable crying: Whether it’s the loud bawling, or the quiet sobbing, women cry frequently over the littlest things. It’s simply an indication that they are still sad over what happened, and that they cannot handle other things that make them upset. Offer to be there for them, but never tell them to stop crying. If your female partner doesn’t cry, it doesn’t mean she’s not hurt. She may still be in denial or shock.

  2. Talking and talking: Some women who go through a miscarriage want to relive the moment over and over by talking about it. On the other hand, others would not want to discuss the event at all. When she does want to talk about the loss, listen without being judgmental.

  3. Guilt feelings: She may feel responsible for the baby’s death, or may insistently blame herself or something that she did.

  4. Anger: Some women who have recently miscarried may feel an unexplainable anger at the slightest things. If she does become angry at you, do not fire back and acknowledge this as a normal reaction to the loss.

  5. Isolation: She may lock herself up at home and refuse to speak to anyone, including her male partner. This is especially noticeable in women whose partners seem unaffected by the event.

  6. Physical Intimacy: The woman may not want to have sex at this time. Respect this, and know that it is actually better to refrain from sexual activity while her body heals from the loss.

  7. Pregnancy: Some women who experience pregnancy loss want to become pregnant almost immediately, as if to compensate for this loss. This is not only impulsive, but also harmful to her body, as her organs have not healed fully yet.
