First symptoms of pregnancy - Frequently asked questions

Dear Madam,

We have been trying to conceive for some time, we wondered if you could clarify whether there is a difference the vaginal mucus which is one of the very early signs of pregnancy and the vaginal mucus which is a sign of ovulation

This was a great question to receive. The reason is that vaginal mucus is not often discussed as one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. This is because, it is not something that is experienced by all women. Yet, it is our experience that some women will have vaginal mucus discharge during early pregnancy. There is a difference in texture and stretchiness compared to vaginal mucus during ovulation.

Dear Pregnancy Wizard,

Please can you let me know how long it should be following conception that I should know whether or not I am pregnant. I'm desperate to become pregnant, yet so far had none of the very early symptoms of pregnancy.

This is a very difficult question to answer accurately, this is because all women are different and show different very early symptoms of pregnancy. They also have different menstrual patterns and ovulate at different times. You may start to experience changes to your breast area within 5-7 days of conception, yet you might not think of this as a sign of pregnancy. You can only be sure once you have taken a pregnancy test kit. Our advice is to relax and enjoy the moment a little bit more.

Dear Madam,

Please can you describe the most popular very early symptoms of pregnancy. I know I should probably buy a home pregnancy test kit, I just thought I would try to understand the symptoms first. So far, I am late with my period and have experienced a slight swelling in the breast area. Does this mean I am pregnant?

Firstly, it does sound as if being pregnant is a possibility. You might wish to consider visiting your medical doctor or indeed buying a home pregnancy test kit. Regarding the more common of the very first symptoms of pregnancy, these include; missed period, headaches, backaches, constipation, morning sickness, sore or swollen breasts, gentle spotting or discharge and tiredness. Since you've got two of the first symptoms of pregnancy, a test is well in order, good luck!

We'll continue to add to this page over time, however it was very interesting to receive the first letter we've printed above. If you look around the Internet of read some of the better pregnancy books, it is very rare for them to mention vaginal mucus as one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. Yet, in our experience, it certainly should be considered as one.
