Heartburn during Pregnancy
Heartburn affects millions of people worldwide. It isn't just pregnant mothers who suffer from it but heartburn during pregnancy is very common in pregnancy and especially in the second and third trimesters.
The affliction itself it caused by acid rising from the stomach and up through the esophagus and throat. Sometimes the acid from heartburn actually enters the mouth which can lead to complicated problems after long periods of time.
Luckily for mothers who suffer heartburn during pregnancy the heartburn itself, although agonizing at times, will go away as your body gets itself back to normal after the pregnancy.
There are treatments you can take for heartburn during pregnancy with the most popular being Gaviscon. We know of mothers who have gone through bottles of this stuff during their pregnancies and the best thing of all is it's absolutely safe to take during pregnancy.
To alleviate symptoms of heartburn during pregnancy here's a few tips from us. Elevate your bed (at the side your head is on) with a few books so that you're not laid out flat when you're sleeping or reading a book in bed. This ensures the acid can't reflux as far up as it would if you were laying flat. You should also allow a few hours before bedtime after eating your last meal to let the stomach digest the food - going to bed or lying down shortly after a meal will certainly aggravate the condition.
Our last tip is to keep a bottle of Gaviscon handy by the bedside - there's nothing worse then waking up during the night with severe pain from heartburn during pregnancy. Quash it as soon as you wake up with a few spoonfuls and head off back to sleep.
