Missed Period
After months of careful planning, folic acid and diets, observation of the evolution cycle and other factors, one fine day you have found that you missed a period, but before congratulating yourself, wait and check. There are many causes other than pregnancy that can cause a missed period.
One of the most common is known as amenorrhea, characterized by the absence of menstrual periods, being a temporal irregularity. Because amenorrhea may cause stopping menstruation for up to 3 months in a row or longer, it may be confused with a pregnancy missed period.
The second most common cause of having a late period is stress. Stress is also associated to pregnancy but in this case, it may occur as a result of a physical condition, such as sexually transmitted infection, arduous exercising, and severe illness and even due to weight gain or weight loss.
Stress can be emotional, causing depression, anxiety and other behavioral conduct, as well as changes in your usual routine, among other changes, and particularly in women under age 20. Any form of stress may cause you to miss a period and, once again failed expectations.
Normal development and hormone imbalance during the teenager years affects the menstrual cycle, causing also missed periods. Hormone imbalances also affect women age 20 and older, after they stop taking birth control pills and begin to lose periods without being actually pregnant.
The last cause of a missed period is what you were looking forward to hearing about it: if you have been having sex in the past several months towards conceiving, congratulations, you are already pregnant!
