Morning Sickness

Morning Sickness SufferingMorning sickness has long been associated with pregnancy; it is usually experienced in the early stages of pregnancy and will last for the first twelve to fourteen weeks. No one knows for absolute certainty why some of us experience morning sickness; the most common view is that it is our body's reaction to the changes in hormone levels.

The fact that morning sickness appears to be so random means that it is often difficult to prepare for. Some women do not experience any morning sickness with their first child, yet have a dreadful experience with morning sickness with their second child. There are no rules to morning sickness and much like pregnancy; it can be different every time.

In some cases, morning sickness is an early sign of pregnancy. When a pregnancy has yet to be confirmed, vomiting and nausea is often a hint from our body that something is changing. In fact, a lot of women confirm that they only took a pregnancy test because they started to feel sick in the morning, once they started to think there was a possibility they might be pregnant, they start to recall other symptoms of pregnancy. It's funny how our body works to get our attention sometimes!

If you're one of the unlucky ones and destined to have morning sickness, have a look at your current diet. You might not fancy it anyway; however it is probably wise to stay clear of greasy and spicy foods. Obviously drink plenty of fluids and try to eat items such as toast, fresh fruit and vegetables. If you can still stomach alcohol, now is probably a very good time to stop.

The bad news is that there is not a cure for morning sickness, if your card is marked to be one of the unfortunates them I'm afraid you will have to grin and bear it. As horrendous as this might sound, you should find comfort in the fact that the general feeling of sickness should have cleared up by lunchtime. Whilst this is a small consolation, this knowledge should be helpful to you if you're planning your days.

The good news about morning sickness is that it generally only lasts for the duration of the first trimester. After twelve weeks or so, you should begin to notice improvements as well as a return of some of the energy missing previously. It's at this stage that you might start to feel pregnant rather than comparing yourself to doing 10 rounds with a prize fighter.

In some cases, morning sickness can be obstructive, especially if you're working or need to travel in the mornings. If you find that morning sickness is stopping you from doing what you would normally do, it is probably best that you visit your Doctor. Some women are not happy to announce their pregnancy until the first three months have been safely navigated; unfortunately morning sickness is at its height during these first few weeks. If this applies to you, speak with your Doctor and ensure they give you the necessary paperwork should you require time off.

One final thing, it is thought that you can tell the sex of a baby based upon whether you experienced morning sickness or not. So should you be painting the nursery pink or blue? You'll find the answer somewhere on this web site. Of course we take no responsibility should this old wives tail prove to be incorrect.
