Pregnancy Spotting

You may be experiencing pregnancy spotting and you are worried, however, when you mention it to your doctor they act as if it is nothing at all. The reason your doctor has the nonchalant attitude is that he sees it all time with the majority of pregnant women.

Pregnancy spotting may not be completely normal and yes, you should let your doctor know, however, it is not the end of the world either. Many women have pregnancy spotting of about a teaspoon or so without any complications whatsoever.

It is pretty common to have pregnancy spotting around the seventh to ninth week of pregnancy. This is when the embryo implants itself into your uterine wall. You may also notice a small amount of blood after intercourse or any heavy lifting, this is also normal since the cervix has additional and engorged blood vessels during this time.

If you are in your first trimester, the first three months of pregnancy, spotting could be a sign of a miscarriage or a tubal pregnancy. However, small spotting is normally nothing to worry about. If you are having a miscarriage you will experience more blood that just a teaspoon or so, it will be more likely over ½ cup and you should also have cramping. With a tubal pregnancy, the symptoms include vaginal bleeding more than a teaspoon and pain on one side of the pelvic.

Once you mention to your doctor that you have pregnancy spotting he will determine if he believes a pelvic exam is in order to ease your mind that the pregnancy is fine and that you are not losing the baby or have a tubal pregnancy.

Do not worry; pregnancy spotting is very common during the first trimester. Very healthy babies are born to mothers that experience pregnancy spotting.
