A Positive-Turned-Negative Pregnancy Test: What Does it Mean?

You must be on top of the world after finding out you are pregnant – at least that’s what the home pregnancy test told you. It was so clear, that little line that confirms that you are indeed expecting. To really confirm the result, you take a brand new test, only to find that this time, you’re not pregnant. Frustrating, isn’t it? What could erratic pregnancy test results mean?

There are several reasons for a sudden change in results however the most common is a chemical pregnancy. For a home pregnancy test kit to give a positive result, it must be able to detect a considerable amount of hCG in the woman’s urine. HCG is a pregnancy hormone that comes from a developing placenta. A woman who isn’t pregnant may get a positive pregnancy test if she has been taking medications that contain this hormone in them. Otherwise, a positive test means her blood and urine contain hCG and she really is pregnant.

But what does it mean if another test yields negative results? One of two things could have happened. First, a woman may have been pregnant at the time of the test (thus the detection of HCG in her urine). Or, she may have been recently pregnant but wasn’t anymore, at the time of the test. It takes a few weeks for HCG to leave the system after a pregnancy, so if a woman was pregnant and had a miscarriage (which she may not have known and would have thought it was her period), the HCG would still cause the pregnancy tests to come out positive.

If you are worried about your positive-turned-negative test results, consult your doctor for a physical exam to determine exactly what happened.
