Common Reasons for a False Negative Pregnancy Test
HCG pregnancy tests are usually most reliable if taken fourteen days after a possible conception. Doctors even suggest that a woman must wait a few days after her missed period before performing a home pregnancy test. These tests have an accuracy rate of 97% if the results are read in a timely manner, and if all instructions in performing the test are followed carefully, so why are there still tests that give off a false negative result? Here’s what false negative test could imply:
- Premature Attempt to Detect Pregnancy
This means that one may have taken the test too early, and this may have affected the product’s sensitivity to the hormone hCG. For most home tests to detect a pregnancy, there has to a be suitable amount of HCG in the urine. If tested too early, the amount of HCG may still not be enough to elicit an accurate result. It is also possible that the body has not even begun secreting the pregnancy hormone yet.
- Erroneous technique
You may have followed the instructions to the best of your ability, but sometimes, some tests are erratic (which means the stated instructions are what are wrong). Other times, it could be in the simple techniques used. For instance, the sample in which you dipped your device was too little, or when you held it against your urine flow, it wasn’t long enough.
- Missing the Reaction Time
Most home pregnancy test kits have a reaction time of five minutes. Manufacturers recommend not reading the results beyond the given time, because of the tendency of the reading to “look” different after the urine has evaporated.
