Vaginal Discharge during Pregnancy
Sometimes with justified alarm vaginal discharge during pregnancy is a scary symptom that many women do not how to face. Vaginal discharge occurs often and is known as leukorrhea, a thin, milky fluid discharge occurring occasionally to all women whether they are pregnant or not.
Vaginal discharge during pregnancy can be more common due to the increasing estrogen production in addition to more blood flowing to your vaginal area and there is nothing to worry about it, except the avoidance of tampons, because of the risk of introducing germs into your vagina.
To protect your underwear you can use panty liners to feel more comfortable, but do not use a vaginal douche or assume that vaginal discharge during pregnancy is an infection and try to treat it yourself. Although it is normal, if you want to make sure of this, ask your doctor or midwife.
Leukorrhea is a discharge made up of secretions from the cervix and vagina, getting rid of old cells from its walls and normal bacteria living there. Periodical discharges occurs as early as you begin your menstrual cycle and one year or so after menopause.
However, if your find that your vaginal discharge during pregnancy is yellowish, green or has a strong smell and causes itching, then you are having all the signs of a vaginal infection or STD. The most common infection during pregnancy is yeast infection (candidiasis) that your doctor can easily treat
Sometimes vaginal discharge during pregnancy may be accompanied by spotting, that you can confuse with infection. That is why you should never try to diagnosis yourself or take self-medication, but notify the doctor whenever spotting and discharge last longer than a day.
