Emotions during Pregnancy and Staying Strong

One of the most random things to deal with for expectant mums, is the roller coaster ride of emotions during pregnancy. These emotions are sometimes very difficult to control and usually come at us with no notice, so one minute we may be fine and relaxed, the next we might have turned into a wailing banshee.

Obviously this can be a confusing time, not just for us but our loved ones too. Our partners maybe looking forward to spending some time with their loving wives, only to be greeted by a tired and irritable women in her place. This is why it is worth taking some time to understand the different emotions during pregnancy and why it's important to stay strong. Clearly having some form of expectations is better than not being prepared for certain changes.

Probably the best way to deal with changing emotions during pregnancy is to keep an open, honest and constant dialogue with those around you. Our family is probably as confused or apprehensive as we are, try to take the time and describe how you are feeling, perhaps agree some exclusive "me time" where you do nothing but put your feet up.

Keep an eye on the amount of sleep you are getting, tiredness will only exacerbate your emotions during pregnancy. During the early stages of pregnancy, almost all women experience extreme fatigue. Whilst your energy will return during the second trimester, you should try to understand your limits and how a lack of sleep can affect your emotions during pregnancy.

Other common emotions during pregnancy stem from fear. Whilst it is sometimes hard to admit, having a baby can be a frightening prospect. You may have questions running around inside your mind, such as will you be able to look after a baby? Can we cope financially? Or am I ready for such major changes? These are all typical fears and add to the emotions during pregnancy. If you find yourself having similar doubts, we recommend that you begin a log and start to record exactly how you are feeling. Consider what you have written and discuss this with your partner or mid wife. The age old of course, the main thing to remember is to expect changes in emotions during pregnancy. It is highly unusual for a women to experience pregnancy without her emotions being affected. With the amount of chemical changes and hormone imbalances occurring inside of our body, it is no wonder our happy go lucky outlook is replaced at times.

It is easy to say in hindsight, yet it is very true that the rigors of pregnancy and the inevitable changes in emotions during pregnancy will be worth it. And in a way, this is probably the most rational way of dealing with the roller coaster ride of emotions. Try to focus on the precious bundle of joy, and holding your child for the very first time, this is the bigger picture. It's just unfortunate that to experience such a beautiful thing as having a baby, Mother Nature decided to balance it up by messing with our minds!
