Common Words for The Stages of Pregnancy

One of the stages of pregnancy that we all experience is a huge influx of new words to learn or become familiar with. If you’ve never been pregnant before, it can feel like you need to learn a whole new language.

The best way to learn about the different stages of pregnancy is to grab yourself a cup of tea (no coffee now) and spend an hour or so looking at the different pages on this web site. There’s a whole raft of information that has been put together by experienced women, specifically to help other women who are already pregnant or wanting to become so.

Alternatively, you might prefer to spend time with our like minded people. Search your local press for women’s groups or classes that cater for women at different stages of pregnancy. It’s fun to learn about something new with a group of friends providing moral support.

Don’t worry, these new words and phrases will soon become second nature, until then we have helped you out by providing a list of common words used throughout the different stages of pregnancy.

Antenatal

A word to describe the stages of pregnancy before the birth. Often referred to as in "Antenatal classes".

Anterior position

This is used to describe the position of your baby in the womb, this is the normal birthing position when your baby's head is pointing downwards.

Assisted delivery

This is when the medical staff will help during the delivery process. Usually this is when the baby or mother is at risk.

Trimester

A trimester is used to describe the different stages of pregnancy

Pregnancy due date

During the early stages of pregnancy, you will be given a pregnancy due date. This is based upon your last known period.

Early symptoms of pregnancy

This includes morning sickness, missed period and other signs of pregnancy.

Natural birth

During the early stages of pregnancy you will need to decide what type of birth you prefer. A natural birth is a birth without the aid of drugs and medicine.

Home birth

A home birth is when you decide to give birth at home rather than in a hospital or birthing center.

Signs of ovulation

If you are trying to become pregnant, understanding the signs of ovulation will help you to identify your most fertile time of the month.

Maternity clothes

You will most likely start thinking about maternity clothes during the second stages of pregnancy as you start to grow more.

Caesarean Section

Sometimes referred to as C-Section. This is when your baby is delivered via an operation to your stomach.

Dilation

This is when your cervix widens to allow the natural birth of the baby via the birth canal

Episiotomy

This is an incision made on the vagina to make it easier to deliver the baby.
