The Third Trimester in Pregnancy
The third trimester can often feel like the last few miles of a marathon, you're exhausted, ran down and yet you're excited because you can see the finishing line is in sight. Like a successful long distance runner, you will be able to call on hidden reserves of energy you did not know previously existed.
At the same time, you may also start to experience the same nagging doubts that a marathon runner might have. The third trimester means it is really happening, a runner hopes that their training and mental preparation will see them over the line, yet for expectant mothers, there's no dry run when it comes to having a baby.
For mothers expecting their first baby, it is natural for them to have doubts about their own ability as a new Mum during the third trimester. Will they be a good mother, will they know what to do? In most cases, this is irrational fear; however it is much easier to say that than dispel your thoughts.
One experience common in many women during the third trimester is the increase in their energy levels. Some experts refer to this as the "nest building" phase, often it is a major concern for loving partners as they see their heavily pregnant wife racing around the house cleaning, or climbing ladders in order to paint or replace pictures. This is a perfectly natural reaction in the woman; of course they want everything to be perfect for when the baby arrives.
During the third trimester, you will start to experience heavier movements from your baby; you may also be able to make out shapes along your stomach as the baby moves around. Of course, you'll also have grown in size, unfortunately for you there is still more growing to be done.
At this stage, the baby is starting to grow vital organs as well. The average size of the baby at the start of the third trimester is around 14 inches; this is the time that your baby's lungs are being developed making sure that he or she is strong enough to breathe on their own when they are born.
Often, the third trimester is about planning and organizing, for example are you still sure about how you will have your baby? Which drugs would you like to have available? You should talk openly about any doubts or anxiety you have during the third trimester as it is crucial you feel relaxed and fit enough for the birthing process. At this time, you should also have packed or preparing to pack your hospital bag, whilst premature babies are relatively rare, it is best to be prepared.
For some women, the third trimester is their favorite experience of the whole pregnancy. This view is also shared by many fathers, who for the first time in many cases can get involved in the planning, start to feel the kicks from junior and really start to share in the excitement, anticipation and joy of the impending birth. Enjoy the third trimester, your life is about to change for the better.
